What Are The F Keys?

Modified on Wed, 25 Jun at 12:35 PM

The F keys, or (Function Keys), are a row of keys typically labeled F1 through F12 at the top of a computer keyboard. Their primary purpose is to perform specific tasks or shortcuts, the function of which often changes depending on the program or operating system you're using.

F1: Almost universally opens the Help menu for the active program.

F2: Often used to rename a selected file or folder in Windows. In Excel, it edits the active cell.

F3: Frequently opens a search function within a program or the operating system.

F4: In combination with Alt (Alt + F4), it closes the active window or program.

F5: The classic refresh key for web browsers and refreshing content in windows. In PowerPoint, it starts a slideshow.

F6: Moves the cursor to the address bar in most web browsers.

F7: In Microsoft Office programs (like Word), it often performs a spell and grammar check.

F8: Can be used to access the Windows boot menu (e.g., Safe Mode) during startup.

F9: Often used for refreshing documents (e.g., in Word) or sending/receiving emails in Outlook.

F10: Activates the menu bar in many applications. Shift + F10 often acts like a right-click.

F11: Toggles full-screen mode in web browsers and other applications.

F12: Commonly opens the "Save As" dialog box in many programs, especially Microsoft Office.

Important for Laptops:

Many laptops have a special "Fn" (Function) key. On these keyboards, the F keys often have secondary functions printed on them (like volume control, screen brightness, Wi-Fi toggle). To use the standard F1-F12 functions, you might need to hold down the Fn key while pressing the desired F key. Some laptops also have an "Fn Lock" feature that lets you toggle between the standard F key function and the multimedia function without holding Fn.
