How To Fix A Paper Jam

Modified on Wed, 25 Jun at 12:32 PM

1. Turn Off the Printer and Unplug It: This is the most important first step for safety. It prevents further damage to the printer and protects you from electrical shock or moving parts. If you have a laser printer, it's also a good idea to let it cool down for 15-30 minutes, as the fuser assembly can be very hot.

2. Check the Display Panel: Many modern printers have a display panel that will show you the exact location of the paper jam with instructions or illustrations. This can save you a lot of time searching.

3. Open All Access Doors/Panels:

Front Cover: This is usually where you access the ink cartridges or toner.

Rear Access Door/Duplexer: Many printers have a panel on the back that opens to reveal the paper path, especially useful for jams in the exit area or for duplex printing.

Paper Tray Area: Remove the paper tray completely and look inside the feeder mechanism.

Top Cover/Scanner Unit (for all-in-ones): If you have an all-in-one printer, the scanner unit often lifts up to give you access to the main printing area.

4.  Gently Remove the Jammed Paper:

Pull Slowly and Carefully: When you find the jammed paper, grasp it firmly with both hands (if possible) and pull it slowly and steadily in the direction of the paper path. Avoid yanking, as this can tear the paper and leave small pieces behind.

Remove All Pieces: If the paper tears, it's crucial to remove every single scrap. Even tiny pieces of paper can cause future jams or trigger "false jam" errors. Use a flashlight to thoroughly inspect the entire paper path.

Don't Force It: If the paper is very stuck, don't force it. Try opening a different access panel or rotating rollers (if your printer allows manual rotation) to gently nudge the paper free.

5. Check for Other Debris: While you're in there, inspect the rollers and other internal components for any bits of paper, dust, or other foreign objects that could cause a jam. You can gently wipe rollers with a lint-free cloth if they appear dirty.

6. Close All Panels Securely: Make sure all doors and covers are latched tightly. A loose cover can prevent the printer from functioning or cause another jam.

7. Plug In and Power On: Plug the printer back in and turn it on. The printer will often go through an initialization process.

8. Run a Test Print: Print a test page to ensure the jam is cleared and the printer is working correctly.
